How to keep your coffee fresh
Where to keep beans, how long they last, and whether to use the freezer.
Roasted coffee is at its best for a few weeks. Oxygen, light, heat and moisture all fade the flavour, so a few simple habits make a big difference.
The short version
- Keep beans in their bag with the valve closed, or in an airtight container.
- Store them somewhere cool and dark, away from the stove and sunlight.
- Avoid the fridge: coffee picks up moisture and smells there.
- Grind just before you brew.
When to drink it
| Brew method | Start drinking | Best within |
|---|---|---|
| Filter | 3–5 days after roast | 5 weeks |
| Espresso | 7–10 days after roast | 6 weeks |
Freshly roasted coffee releases carbon dioxide for several days. A short rest lets it settle so it brews evenly, especially as espresso.
Can I freeze coffee?
Yes, if you won't finish it within a month. Split it into airtight portions and freeze them once. Let a portion reach room temperature before opening so no condensation forms, and don't refreeze it.
A subscription keeps fresh coffee arriving just as you finish the last bag.
